Learning Set 1 Speed Sounds
Children learn to recognize the sounds and also pronounce the pure sounds, which will later help them blend those into words. They are also developing their fine motor skills by practicing to write the sounds.
Children are rapidly building up vocabulary as in most cases they are not as emerged in the language as their native English speaking peers are. We actively use songs and games at this stage.
Learning the Set 1 Speed Sounds can start as early as when your child is 3 to 5 years old depending on their aptitude to languages and existing vocabulary.
Below are the Set 1 Speed Sounds that the children learn.
These are the Set 1 Speed Sounds written with one letter:
m a s d t i n p g o c k u b f e l h r j v y w z x
These are the sounds written with two letters (we call these ‘special friends’):
sh th ch qu ng nk ck
Learning to blend with Set 1 Speed Sounds
Once the children can say the first group Set 1 sounds with speed, they will learn how to read words containing those sounds by sound blending. For example m-a-t makes the word mat.
First, they will learn to read three to four letter words and we will gradually increase the length and complexity of the words.
Once they are able to read words confidently, we will begin to read short phrases.
Finally, we start reading short books with the Set 1 Speed Sounds only and children can transition to learning the Set 2 Speed Sounds.
