Learn to read! Read to learn!

When teaching early literacy skills to children, we follow the native speaker approach and use synthetic phonics. Synthetic phonics is the ability to convert a letter or letter group into sounds that are then blended together into a word.

Why is this important?

All words in the English language are made up of individual sounds. These sounds are merged together to form words. We use 44 sounds to make all the words in the English language, but we have only 26 letters. The 26 letters work singly, in pairs and sometimes in threes to represent one sound. Furthermore, we spell many of the 44 sounds in more than one way. For example, the sound s can be spelled in many different ways:

s – sat | ss – dress | se – horse | c – circle | ce – piece

There are over 150 ways to spell the 44 sounds. This is why some children find learning to read at school quite tricky. They are introduced to the 26 letters but they are rarely taught the 44 sounds and the variations in their spelling.

At Speedy Ready, we are using a blend of programmes, such as the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme and Teach Your Monster How To Read, to get children off to a flying start with their literacy. RWI is a method of learning based upon letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing. We use the Teach Your Monster How To Read programme to supplement and gamify the learning experience.

OUR CLASSES

Our online classes are designed to bring the joy of reading to every child!

Kids progress at different speeds and they are regularly assessed. Once a child is ready to move on to the next level, we will suggest the best way to do so.

Set 1 Sounds

Children learn to recognize the sounds and also pronounce the pure sounds, which will later help them blend those into words. They are also developing their fine motor skills by practicing to write the sounds.

Set 2 Sounds

Once children have mastered the Set 1 Speed Sounds and can blend them with speed to read words, they can move on to learning the Set 2 Speed Sounds. Those are also called long vowels .

Set 3 Sounds

Once children have mastered the Set 2 Speed Sounds, we continue with the final set. Set 3 teaches children more ways to write the sounds that they already know and increases the complexity of words they read.
